Checkmate - уникальная смесь геймплейных механик Sid Meier's Civilization V и классических шахмат. Разработчик сделал так, чтобы скучные, не требующие навыков бои в Цивилизации стали очень увлекательными. Теперь исход боёв зависит только от вашего уровня игры, а не от какого-то непонятного скрипта.

Геймплей в Checkmate довольно похож на любую другую стратегию в реальном времени. Вы исследуете новые вещи, строите здания, собираете ресурсы и управляете своими юнитами, например, не давая им умереть с голоду. Однако, когда вы сталкиваетесь с врагом, игровой процесс кардинально меняется. Игра переключится на пошаговый режим, и вам придется играть своими юнитами точно так же, как в шахматах (с некоторыми измененными правилами). Цель игры заключается в том, чтобы, естественно, поставить мат и/или захватить короля противника, чтобы победить.

В игре представлены различные режимы игры, в том числе:
• Классический режим: Вы управляйте ресурсами и каждой клеткой карты
• Режим песочницы: Игра без какой-либо цели. Посмотрим, какие ужасы вы можете создать.
• Режим Доски: Поиграйте на шахматной доске 8x8, чтобы узнать измененные правила игры в шахматы.
• Сценарии. Испытайте свои знания и навыки в серии готовых сценариев от очень простых до невероятно сложных.

Каждый режим полностью настраиваемый и имеет множество опций.

Но что, если вы не знаете как играть в шахматы или плохо в них играете? Не волнуйтесь! В игре будет полная инструкция по игре в шахматы.

Что мы имеет в итоге? Практически идеальную игру для любителей шахмат и стратегий, а также для тех людей, кто всегда хотел научиться играть в шахматы, но его что-то останавливало.

Checkmate is a cross-over between Sid Meier's Civilization V and Chess. By combining the management element from Civilization V with the strategy part of Chess, this game creates an unique experience for all ages.

This game is currently in development by a 1-man team (namely me). The idea originated from Civilization V itself, which I always used to play. I really liked it, but I didn't like the battles, which felt really flat and seemed like they required almost no skill at all.

I wanted to get rid of this by combining Chess with Civilization V. Chess namely has the great feature that you can only win by skill, and nothing else. I wanted to capture this important element of Chess in Checkmate.

Checkmate plays out fairly similar to any other real-time strategy game. You research new things, place buildings, gather resources and manage your pieces by, for example, not letting them starve to death. Pretty basic stuff, really.

Whenever you come across an enemy, however, the gameplay changes drastically. The game will switch over to turn-based mode, and you'll have to play with your units just like in Chess (with some rules slightly tinkered).

The goal of the game is therefor, naturally, to checkmate and/or take the opponent's king in order to win.

The game features various different options of play, including:
• Classic Mode: Manage resources and pieces in the way the game is meant to be played.
• Sandbox Mode: Toy around in the sandbox and see what horrors you can create.
• Board Mode: Play around on a 8x8 chessboard to learn the altered rules and improve your general play.
• Scenarios: Test you knowledge and skill on a series of pre-made scenarios ranging from very easy to incredibly difficult.

Each mode is fully customizable with lots of options, and the gameplay can be tinkered at any time to create your own custom experience. Some of the options you'll be able to change include:
• Piece management: You don't like the way the game handles the pieces in the current setup? Then change it all with just a couple of clicks!
• Hue, Brightness & Saturation: The entire world will be recolourable for a completely new experience.
• World settings: Change the board from small to massive, toy with the game speed, tinker with the world randomization and much, much more.
